The Sega Genesis console was released in the U.S. on this day in 1989

Sega was one of the top five arcade game manufacturers in the early 1980s. Sega launched their own competitor to the Nintendo NES with the Sega Genesis.  The Genesis has often ranked among the best video game consoles by game enthusiasts. Sonic The Hedgehog helped brand The Sega Genesis as a major player in the console wars. It had games like Golden Axe, Ghoul N’ Ghost, The Revenge Of Shinobi and Altered Beast available at launch.
